La Paz, Bolivia - 2008

by Rex Features

REACHING DIZZYING HEIGHTS IN LA PAZ

Set high in the Andes Mountains in Bolivia lies the highest national capital in the world, welcome to the dizzying wonder that is La Paz.

The city is built in, and clinging to the sides of, a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River; depending on where you are in the city the altitude can range anything from 4,058 meters (13,313 feet) above sea level to 3,100 meters (10,170 feet).

La Paz' geography reflects the society of its 1.6 million inhabitants - the lower you go into the valley the more affluent the people who live there. So, while many middle-class paceños live in high-rise condos near the centre of the valley the poorest people live high up where low oxygen levels make things more uncomfortable.

The breathtaking New Zealand

by Rex Features

New Zealand is a unique land of breathtaking scenery; craggy coastlines, sweeping beaches, abundant rainforests, snow-capped mountains, gurgling volcanic pools and glacier-fed lakes all compete for attention beneath a brilliant blue sky.

Pair this with a thriving and friendly indigenous culture, bustling cosmopolitan cities and traditional towns, and it is little wonder that the country captivates so many visitors.

New Zealand, known in the native Maori language as Aotearoa, is a sub-tropical island nation in the South Pacific Ocean. A modern but sparsely populated country, its wide range of outdoor and adventure activities attract visitors from far and wide.

Ancient and Modern Collide in Beijing

by Rex Features

Capital of the People's Republic of China, Beijing is a city of contrasts; a place where ancient history lies comfortably side by side with the most cutting edge of modern life.

And in recent years this, the most populous city in the world, has been undergoing a major facelift in preparation for the 2008 Olympics; something that has highlighted the two disparate halves of Beijing life to an ever greater extent.

One of the most important parts of the city, standing almost at its centre, is Tiananmen Square, which has been the focus for numerous important political and social events in China's history. Covering a vast 40.5 hectares (100.acres) the square is the largest open-urban square in the world and a must see for any visitors to the city. Built by Chairman Mao to impress it certainly lives up to its purpose; the vast open space is only broken by the 38-metre (125 ft) high Monument to the People's Heroes completed in 1958, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong completed in 1977. The square was named after the formidable Tiananmen Gate, which stands at one end and marks the entrance to the Forbidden City.

Chiang Mai, 'Rose of the North', Thailand

by Rex Features

CHARMED BY CHIANG MAI

Chiang Mai is Thailand's "Rose of the North" - so called because of the abundance of flowers that thrive in its cooler mountain climate.

And the city itself has its own fair share of outstanding natural beauty, not to mention friendly locals; if you want to get away from busy Bangkok, but still want to stay in a big city with lots of things to do, Chiang Mai is the place to be.

Chiang Mai is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province.

In recent years Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city, although it still lacks the cosmopolitan nature of Bangkok. However, its multitude of attractions still attract thousands of foreign visitors each year.

Cambodia: A Vibrant Culture, People, and Great Sights

by Rex Features

Despite its tumultuous and often violent past Cambodia is emerging as a new tourist hotspot with visitors rediscovering its wonderful temples and beaches.

Cambodia is a Southeast Asian nation bordered by Vietnam to the east, Laos to the north, Thailand to the northwest, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.

The country is best known for the horrors that were perpetrated there in the 70s during the Khmer Rouge's incredibly brutal reign of terror, which left over one million people dead.

However, the situation changed when the Vietnamese invaded the country in order to stop Khmer Rouge incursions across the border and the genocide of Vietnamese in Cambodia. Years of fighting followed before a comprehensive peace settlement was reached in 1991. In 1993 the situation improved further after UN-sponsored elections were held and a new Cambodian government formed.

Cyprus' Historical Gems

by Rex Features

As the third-largest island, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, Cyprus attracts millions of visitors every year.

And while the island's coast calls to sunseekers and clubbers, inland there can still also be found a haven of traditional villages, medieval castles and impressive ancient sites.

Cyprus is the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, Adonis and home to King Cinyras, Teucer and Pygmalion. Due to this there are many archaeological and antiquities sites scattered around the island - dating from the New Stone Age through to the Roman Empire.

The Salineras of Maras, Maras, Peru

By Rex Features

Glowing like liquid gold in the late afternoon sun, the salineras of Maras in Peru may not actually contain the sought after precious metal but, for the residents of the area, they contain something far more precious - salt.

Forty kilometers from Cuzco, in the Cuzco Region of Peru, is the town of Maras, which is in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Here the salineras, or salt pans, present a truly unique sight, consisting of thousands of mismatched white squares terraced along a steep green hillside. Each of these squares is a miniature 'salt mine' and provides income for a local family.

In the "Land of the Rising Sun" there is no greater city of contrasts than the sprawling metropolis that is Tokyo.

The Mysterious Basque Country

by Rex Features

Basque Country in the western Pyrenees Mountains spans the border between France and Spain. Steeped in folklore and ancient customs its people cling to their identity, their local unique languages, and their traditional way of life - offering an interesting diversion for tourists who visit the area.

The historical Basque region covers the homeland of the Basque people, an ethnic group who inhabit parts of north-central Spain and southwestern France. It is made up of seven traditional regions; the four within Spain form Hegoalde ('the South'), while the three within the France form Iparralde ('the North'). Hegoalde is self governed but Iparralde has not had these kind of rights since loosing them in the French Civil War; it is now part of the French administrative area of Pyrénées Atlantiques.

Lauca National Park - the Unique Chilean Altiplano

One of the most beautiful sights in the South American country of Chile is the awe-inspiring high altitude Lauca National Park - an area of wild uncultivated beauty.

Located in Chile's far north in the Andean range, the park - which has been designated a Global Biosphere Reserve - encompasses an area of 1,379 km² and is a mix of altiplano (high plain) and mountains.

Outside of Tibet, the altiplano of the Andes is the most extensive area of high plateau on earth. As such, combined with the area's abundance of wildlife and plant life, the park holds a great draw for nature trekkers; the large number of walking trails available to explore are one of the area's best attractions.

Off the Beaten Track, Brazil

by Rex Features

Brazil is the giant of South America; a dazzling mix of pristine beaches, steamy jungles and manic metropolises.

It is a country of great diversity, from the bustling urban mosaic of São Paulo to the infinite cultural energy of Pernambuco and Bahia, the untouched wilderness of the Amazon rainforest and world-class landmarks such as the Iguaçu Falls.

While it may be famed for sprawling cities such as Rio de Janeiro, there is actually a great deal more to explore if you venture a little way off the beaten track.

Brazil was originally a colony of Portugal (Portuguese remains the main language to this day) after it was discovered in 1500; it gained independence in 1822. Now the largest country in South America, it is made up of 26 states and boasts a coastline of over 7,367 kilometres. Due to this, its diverse population - including a large indigenous population - is mainly concentrated along the coastline and in a few large urban centres in the interior.

Sarawak- a Great Wildlife and Ethnic Tourism Destination

by Rex Features

Once notorious as 'the land of head hunters' Sarawak, a Malaysia state in north-west Borneo, is today one of the greatest wildlife and ethnic tourism destinations in south-east Asia. Covering about a sixth of the area of Borneo, the state has most of the best elements of the world's third largest island but in manageable proportions; endangered orang utans and other primates, colourful hornbills with their giant fruit-pulling beaks, a wealth of curious reptiles including flying lizards, preserved rainforest and half-a-dozen ethnic groups who still wear tradition costumes for festivals and special events.

The nineteenth-century naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace, a contemporary of Darwin, spent months in Sarawak collecting animal specimens, which helped contribute to his theories on natural selection. In the 1860s he described Sarawak as "a most beautiful country where limestone mountains with their fantastic forms and white precipices shot up on every side, draped and festooned with luxuriant vegetation."

Experience the Golden City of Prague, Czech Republic

by Rex Features

Prague is without question one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world. Its architecture, coupled with a great geographical setting, combine with a history of monumental proportions to make for a city as romantic as Paris and as mystical as Venice. A balmy evening stroll on the Karluv Most (Charles Bridge) easily outshines any walk on the Rialto Bridge or the Pont Neuf. A "sundowner" at one of the many pavement restaurant bars more than equals a similar experience on the Champs Elysees… and without breaking the bank, as currently the CZ crown is the currency… but soon the Euro will prevail!

Since the Iron Curtain came down, a whole new generation of tourists have had the Czech Republic's capital opened up to them. The days of 20p beers and dirt cheap, top quality accommodation may now be over, but Prague is still, for the moment, attractively affordable in comparison with many of Europe's great cities.

The best of Barbados, Caribbean

As the most easterly of the West Indies, Barbados faces the warm and calm Caribbean Sea to the west and the cooler, more temperamental Atlantic to the east. Hawaii - More than just Aloha

Hawaii evokes South-Sea magic, hula under the palm trees, necklaces of flowers on bronzed skin, together with white beaches and blue sea. The islands' inhabitants use the greeting "Aloha", which means, according to Polynesian customs, "Welcome stranger, you are my guest.''

AYURVEDIC MEDICINE IN 'GOD'S OWN COUNTRY'

The aryurveda - translated as "the science of longevity" - has been a part of Indian culture for over 2,500 years. Its principles come from the Vedic literature of the VIIth century AD, and it concerns the health at all levels - physical, moral and spiritual.

The ancient practice regards man as being made of the same elements as the universe: earth, water, wind, and fire. Ayurvedic medicine strives to achieve harmony between man and the universe, with an aim of maximising longevity and quality of life. The body and soul are regarded as one, and it is as much a spiritual philosophy as a physical one.

In the ayurveda, the encouragement of good health comes before the curing of disease. Prevention is better than cure, and the body is seen as a temple. The way you eat is fundamental. When disease must be tackled, it is the person that is cured rather than the ailment. For ayurvedic doctors, each individual is different and must be cured in a way specific to their needs.

by Rex Features

Epic colonial architecture, libidinous salsa dancers, Che Guevara murals, vintage cars, white-powder sandy beaches - the images of Cuba are as transfixing as they are timeless. Forget what preconceptions you may have, this is an island of unique historical heritage floating amid a sea of encroaching globalisation.

Located in the northern Caribbean the Republic of Cuba consists of the island of Cuba, the Isle of Youth and several adjacent small islands. Its close proximity to the eastern United States has played an important part in its recent history, and most people are probably more familiar with the country for its politics than its tourism.

The Historic Languedoc Roussillon Area of France

by Rex Features

LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON - THE SECRET SOUTH OF FRANCE

Think of the South of France and images of the glamorous Cote d'Azur or picture-perfect Provence are likely to spring to mind, but there is far more to the region than just those world-famous destinations. From east to west, the lower reaches of France are full of wonderful places to discover, and the ancient province of Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the very best. Boasting a Mediterranean coast geographically close but a world away from the over-developed Riviera, many of France's most captivating historic towns and villages, enchanting chateaus, awe-inspiring mountains and some of the country's most stunning scenery all lie within the boundaries of the province

Languedoc-Roussillon is divided into five départements; Lozère, Gard, Hérault, Aude and the Pyrénées Orientales. All five warrant extensive exploration, but on this guide to the area we will explore the delights of the latter two, which are also the southernmost.

India's Full Moon Festivals

by Rex Features

BATHING AND BARTER AT INDIA'S FULL MOON FESTIVALS

In November, during the full moon of the Kartik Poornima, two of India's great religious Melas, or gatherings, are held. Pilgrims travel for miles to bathe in sacred waters in the belief that their mortal sins will be washed away. But, India being India, the great gatherings of people the fairs attract also mean that no one wants to miss out on the chance of some good old fashioned commerce.

Markets selling everything from garish pictures of Hindu gods, sweets given as prasad or religious offerings and red tilak powder to more secular items like a new pitchfork, jewellery and all manner of cheap plastic goods have sprung up around the festivals. There are even fairgrounds with freak shows and old fashioned Ferris wheels. However, the most important commercial events attached to these pilgrimages, and a great draw for tourists, are two of India's largest livestock fairs - the Pushkar Camel Fair and the Sonepur Elephant Fair.

Mustique, The Island of Luxury Villas

by Rex Features

Now known as a Caribbean island hideaway for the rich and famous, variously described as ``The Georgian Caribbean'' and ``The Island of Luxury Villas'', this was not always the case. It was once a mosquito infested scrubland three miles long and one mile wide, popular at one time as a hideaway for pirates and later a war zone for the French and British.

In 1958 it was occupied by 100 islanders and even less cattle - an important year in Mustique's history, because it was when Lord Glenconner paid $67,500 for the scrub, mosquitoes, cattle and islanders. Glenconner had a vision, as well as connections, and his vision has become a reality.

An island that once boasted seven sugar plantations was in a state of total decay. No roads, no water supply and no essential jetty. However, within ten years the island was producing cotton from its sole plantation, and was almost self sufficient in fruit and vegetable harvests, together with a thriving fishing industry.

World's Largest Casino, The Venetian Macao

by Rex Features

When the Venetian Macao resort hotel opened in Macau, China on 28 August it became the world's biggest casino, and is all part of a drive to create an Asian-style Las Vegas.

The 2.4 billion-dollar resort, which was built entirely on reclaimed land called the Cotai Strip, mirrors the Venetian casino complex in Las Vegas - complete with replicas of Venice's famous canals and romantic architecture.

The ambitious project boasts a fleet of gondolas and includes a copy of Venice's Bridge of Sighs and of St Mark's Square, which has a ceiling of a fake blue sky with white clouds.

A Whistlestop tour of the Cote d'Azur, France

by Rex Features

The Cote d'Azur conjures up many images in the mind - the decadent lifestyles described in F. Scott Fitzgerald novels, the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival, and Brigitte Bardot frolicking on the beach, to name but three. As first time visitors we had a week to explore France's most celebrated stretch of coastline - and we discovered the French Riviera was everything it was cracked up to be, plus plenty more besides.

Arriving at Nice's main train station, it was the grittier side of the city that greeted us initially. As in most big cities, it is the less salubrious elements of urban life that surround the immediate area around the station - sex shops and seedy hotels abound, and the feel of the place is further depressed by large-scale roadworks installing tram lines across the city centre. As a first impression, it wasn't the best, but things can only get better as they say - and they soon did.

The Kasbah Hotels - Discovering Berber Country, Morocco

by Rex Features

From the southern city of Ouarzazate to the confluence of the Drâa and Dadès Rivers at the gateway to the Sahara, the stunning landscape of Morocco offers the perfect place for a retreat in beautiful Berber country. The famous Kasbahs of the North African nation are the places to head for affordable B&B accommodation in picturesque and historic surroundings, and all with views of the snow-covered summits of the High Atlas mountain range.

Report: Pascale Desclos and Tom Scott

At the foot of the High-Atlas mountains the great Moroccan south leads up to the doors of the Sahara, and the two long green valleys of the Drâa and Dadès rivers stretch out, filled with the shadows of dishevelled date palms. Water, mixed with sediment from the mountains, is a blessing in this arid country.

On the banks of the wadis (valleys) live the old Cham tribes, which originated in the Middle East and have been established here for nearly 2,000 years. Their contemporaries of the time called them the Berbers, meaning Barbarians in Latin, because their language was foreign to them.

Fiji Islands - The fascinating blend of cultures

by Rex Features

Comprised of more than 300 volcanic and coral islands, the Fiji archipelago is at the crossroads of the South Pacific. In the days of sailing ships it was known as The Cannibal Isles and carefully avoided by mariners because of its fierce warriors and treacherous waters. More recently, Fiji's tropical climate and location on Pacific air routes has made it a prime spot for tourists.

The tropical destination is famous for the wide variety of activities it offers to visitors; it is a place where you can, amongst others, swim with manta rays; snorkel over giant rainbow gardens of soft coral; scuba dive the White Wall; ride the famous six-metre `Cloud Breaker' wave; float in the calm, quiet waters of a turquoise lagoon; visit a traditional village; or walk through lush rainforest.

There are more than 80 holiday beach resorts in Fiji, many of which offer absolute privacy in secluded spots that accommodate just a handful of guests. It boasts some of the most exclusive small resorts in the world which frequently win international awards of excellence. The largest Fiji resort caters for only 400 guests and no hotel building is taller than the surrounding coconut trees.

A day in the life of Santa Monica's slow lane, America

by Rex Features

Two wheels in the land of the four - a day in the life of Santa Monica's slow lane

I cycle up to the Snug Harbour in Santa Monica and step in to the diner, established in 1941, which passes for history round here. The place has been handed down through the family over the years and is a great place for a quick, no frills, friendly service breakfast. I go for the Huevos Rancheros cooked by the Mexican chefs on view in front of me in the traditional diner style; mellow jazz is played from above, and people in no particular hurry read the paper or tuck into the healthier fruit options on the menu. The interior is nicely decorated in cream and green with black and white photographs of surfers with giant surf boards, and fishermen holding up a prized catch of the day, but mostly it's those family pictures of generations gone by that stare back at me eyeing up my breakfast as I tuck in.

Portugal has a rich seafaring past, superb beach resorts, wistful towns and a landscape wreathed in olive groves, vineyards and wheat fields. Littered with UNESCO World Heritage sites and graced by one of Europe's most relaxed and attractive capitals, it also remains refreshingly affordable.

From the capital city of Lisbon a meandering journey along the coast will take you past, and through, breathtaking scenery, traditional villages, and varied historical and cultural landmarks until you come to Porto.

Lisbon is the westernmost capital in mainland Europe; it can be found on the Atlantic Ocean coast at the point where the river Tagus flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Exotic Lamu Island, Kenya

by Rex Features

Nestling down into the India Ocean, just off the northern coast of Kenya, Lamu has long kept its head down and avoided the attention of its more famous cousin, Zanzibar to the south. Lamu is the main island of the archipelago of the same name. Sleepy and laid back it is just emerging blinking into the limelight, but is still relatively undeveloped and with its own distinct character.

With daily flights from the capital, Nairobi, and plans to extend and 'improve' the airport things are set to change. This is the perfect time to see Lamu before it changes for ever.

Mexico City, The Mexican Megalopolis

by Rex Features

Marvellous Mexico City

As one of the world's most populated urban areas, Mexico City has not always had the most tourist-friendly of reputations. That it is crowded, polluted and crime-ridden are some of the accusations often thrown at Mexico's capital, but while to a degree this can be true - as it is of many major cities throughout the world - the good far outweighs the bad in one of the Americas' most exciting metropolises.

Vibrant, historic and packed full of culture, Mexico City offers plenty of all the things any first time visitor could want from a modern World City. With nearly nine million people in the city itself, and an additional 10 million in the surrounding metropolitan area, Mexico City is teeming with life, both literally and metaphorically.

From its Aztec origins to the colonial era and its 21st Century economic resurgence, Mexico City's story has always been as dramatic and interesting as its elevated location, 7,000 feet above sea level in a dry riverbed. Much more than just a stop-off point for changing planes, Mexico City deserves to be explored a whole lot more than it currently is by the millions of passengers that pass through its airport each year.

Penang - 'The Pearl of the Orient', Malaysia

by Rex Features

The multi-cultural island of Penang - once known as the Pearl of the Orient - has long been a favourite destination for European and Asian travellers, sea-bound traders and businessmen searching for a bolt hole from the steamy Malaysian mainland. In the last thirty years it has also emerged as a significant tourist destination and, more recently, as a tropical retreat for European, Asian and American second home owners encouraged by fiscal advantages introduced by the Malaysian government. Top of the second home owners list are sun-seeking Brits.

Since its foundation as the first British settlement in Malaya in 1786, Penang has almost been a synonym for the exotic east. For over two hundred years the island has been a melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Indian and, to a lesser extent, British influences, where traders have met to exchange and haggle and place their mark on this bustling place known in Malay as 'Betel Nut Island'
