La Paz, Bolivia - 2008
by Rex Features REACHING DIZZYING HEIGHTS IN LA PAZ Set high in the Andes Mountains in Bolivia lies the highest national capital in the world, welcome to the dizzying wonder that is La Paz. The city is built in, and clinging to the sides of, a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River; depending on where you are in the city the altitude can range anything from 4,058 meters (13,313 feet) above sea level to 3,100 meters (10,170 feet). La Paz' geography reflects the society of its 1.6 million inhabitants - the lower you go into the valley the more affluent the people who live there. So, while many middle-class paceños live in high-rise condos near the centre of the valley the poorest people live high up where low oxygen levels make things more uncomfortable.

Ancient and Modern Collide in Beijing
by Rex Features Capital of the People's Republic of China, Beijing is a city of contrasts; a place where ancient history lies comfortably side by side with the most cutting edge of modern life. And in recent years this, the most populous city in the world, has been undergoing a major facelift in preparation for the 2008 Olympics; something that has highlighted the two disparate halves of Beijing life to an ever greater extent. One of the most important parts of the city, standing almost at its centre, is Tiananmen Square, which has been the focus for numerous important political and social events in China's history. Covering a vast 40.5 hectares (100.acres) the square is the largest open-urban square in the world and a must see for any visitors to the city. Built by Chairman Mao to impress it certainly lives up to its purpose; the vast open space is only broken by the 38-metre (125 ft) high Monument to the People's Heroes completed in 1958, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong completed in 1977. The square was named after the formidable Tiananmen Gate, which stands at one end and marks the entrance to the Forbidden City. teksti ja kuvat: http://www.rexfeatures.com/features/m132684024/ancient_and_modern_collide_in_beijing?filter=T&pl=16

Cyprus' Historical Gems
by Rex Features As the third-largest island, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, Cyprus attracts millions of visitors every year. And while the island's coast calls to sunseekers and clubbers, inland there can still also be found a haven of traditional villages, medieval castles and impressive ancient sites. Cyprus is the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, Adonis and home to King Cinyras, Teucer and Pygmalion. Due to this there are many archaeological and antiquities sites scattered around the island - dating from the New Stone Age through to the Roman Empire. teksti ja kuvat: http://www.rexfeatures.com/features/m132678027/cyprus'_historical_gems?filter=T&pl=16

The Salineras of Maras, Maras, Peru
By Rex Features Glowing like liquid gold in the late afternoon sun, the salineras of Maras in Peru may not actually contain the sought after precious metal but, for the residents of the area, they contain something far more precious - salt. Forty kilometers from Cuzco, in the Cuzco Region of Peru, is the town of Maras, which is in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Here the salineras, or salt pans, present a truly unique sight, consisting of thousands of mismatched white squares terraced along a steep green hillside. Each of these squares is a miniature 'salt mine' and provides income for a local family. The Mysterious Basque Country
by Rex Features Basque Country in the western Pyrenees Mountains spans the border between France and Spain. Steeped in folklore and ancient customs its people cling to their identity, their local unique languages, and their traditional way of life - offering an interesting diversion for tourists who visit the area. The historical Basque region covers the homeland of the Basque people, an ethnic group who inhabit parts of north-central Spain and southwestern France. It is made up of seven traditional regions; the four within Spain form Hegoalde ('the South'), while the three within the France form Iparralde ('the North'). Hegoalde is self governed but Iparralde has not had these kind of rights since loosing them in the French Civil War; it is now part of the French administrative area of Pyrénées Atlantiques. teksti ja kuvat: http://www.rexfeatures.com/features/m13266b231/the_mysterious_basque_country?filter=T&pl=16 |

Off the Beaten Track, Brazil
by Rex Features Brazil is the giant of South America; a dazzling mix of pristine beaches, steamy jungles and manic metropolises. It is a country of great diversity, from the bustling urban mosaic of São Paulo to the infinite cultural energy of Pernambuco and Bahia, the untouched wilderness of the Amazon rainforest and world-class landmarks such as the Iguaçu Falls. While it may be famed for sprawling cities such as Rio de Janeiro, there is actually a great deal more to explore if you venture a little way off the beaten track. Brazil was originally a colony of Portugal (Portuguese remains the main language to this day) after it was discovered in 1500; it gained independence in 1822. Now the largest country in South America, it is made up of 26 states and boasts a coastline of over 7,367 kilometres. Due to this, its diverse population - including a large indigenous population - is mainly concentrated along the coastline and in a few large urban centres in the interior.

A unique place and people with a fascinating and complex past, Cajun Country is quite unlike anywhere else in the United States, or indeed the world. Though not officially recognised, the boundaries of Acadiana roughly occupy one third of the southern state perched between Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi, and all aspects of the area, from language and religion to music and food, bear the unmistakable imprint of Cajun culture.

Thailand's in Bloom
by Rex Features Thailand is definitely in bloom thanks to Chiang Rai's fourth flower festival. It is estimated that 150,000 people will visit the vibrant event at Rim Haad Chiang Rai Park in the Muang district. Over 15,000 people a day are expected to enjoy the flowers over nine days at the park 790 km north of Bangkok. Early January is the perfect time for this festival because the climatic conditions during the cool of the winter allow the cultivation of not only exotic tropical flowers, such as orchids, but also temperate blooms like tulips, lilies, hyacinth, cyclamen and gerberas.

Enchanting Imperial Hue, Vietnam
by Rex Features Lying between Saigon in the north and Hanoi in the south of Vietnam, the province of Thua Thien- Hûe seems to encapsulate the romantic image of old Vietnam: a country of rice paddies, mandarin trees and art. Here in the heart of the Vietnam, the land is just as it has been described in books: endless glistening paddy fields and lush mountains on the horizon, lost in the fog. The city of Hûe itself may have been partially ruined after devastating wars with the French and the Americans, but much beauty has been retained - and many fascinating stories lie behind the ruins and empty spaces where sections of the old city once stood.

The best of Barbados, Caribbean
by Rex Features With its spectacular power-white sand beaches, world-class hotels and tropical climate, Barbados is one of the world's classic sun, sea and sand destinations. For the ultimate in relaxation and luxury accommodation, there are few better places on earth, and with year-round sun and that inimitable laid back atmosphere, the most easterly of the Caribbean isles is one of the world's most exclusive holiday destinations. For three centuries an outpost of the old British Empire, Barbados still goes by the nickname of `Little England' in the Caribbean, but West Indian culture pervades equally on the island. As the most easterly of the West Indies, Barbados faces the warm and calm Caribbean Sea to the west and the cooler, more temperamental Atlantic to the east. The built-up west coast, and the south coast, famed for its nightlife, attracts the lion's share of visitors, but the west is not without its charms and contains many of the island's natural beauty spots and sights.

Hawaii - More than just Aloha
by Rex Features Hawaii evokes South-Sea magic, hula under the palm trees, necklaces of flowers on bronzed skin, together with white beaches and blue sea. The islands' inhabitants use the greeting "Aloha", which means, according to Polynesian customs, "Welcome stranger, you are my guest.'' "Alooo-Ha!'' resounds from the loudspeaker of the Boeing 747 after landing at Honolulu airport on the island of Oahu. The archipelago of seven inhabited and over one hundred uninhabited islands in the Pacific Ocean is reached after a 20 hour flight from Europe, half way round the world. Aloha: when planes and ships arrive in Hawaii the local people surge towards the Malhinis; the tourists; all bearing their loincloths.

Cruising the Nubia, Egypt
by Rex Features Egypt is a mystical country steeped in history and culture offering tourists fantastic night life, excellent cuisine and great water sports. Dating over 6000 years Egypt is well regarded as one of the world's oldest civilisations and has long been a Northern African hot spot for the Western World. Egypt has the largest population in the Arab world and the majority of Egyptians live within the Nile Valley and Delta. Many visitors flock to the country's popular areas such as Cairo and Luxor but the sights of Nubia should not be overlooked. Situated between southern Egypt and northern Sudan, Nubia is homeland to Africa's oldest black culture dating back to 3100 BC. India's Full Moon Festivals
by Rex Features BATHING AND BARTER AT INDIA'S FULL MOON FESTIVALS In November, during the full moon of the Kartik Poornima, two of India's great religious Melas, or gatherings, are held. Pilgrims travel for miles to bathe in sacred waters in the belief that their mortal sins will be washed away. But, India being India, the great gatherings of people the fairs attract also mean that no one wants to miss out on the chance of some good old fashioned commerce. Markets selling everything from garish pictures of Hindu gods, sweets given as prasad or religious offerings and red tilak powder to more secular items like a new pitchfork, jewellery and all manner of cheap plastic goods have sprung up around the festivals. There are even fairgrounds with freak shows and old fashioned Ferris wheels. However, the most important commercial events attached to these pilgrimages, and a great draw for tourists, are two of India's largest livestock fairs - the Pushkar Camel Fair and the Sonepur Elephant Fair. The Exotic Lamu Island, Kenya
by Rex Features
Nestling down into the India Ocean, just off the northern coast of Kenya, Lamu has long kept its head down and avoided the attention of its more famous cousin, Zanzibar to the south. Lamu is the main island of the archipelago of the same name. Sleepy and laid back it is just emerging blinking into the limelight, but is still relatively undeveloped and with its own distinct character. Mexico City, The Mexican Megalopolis
by Rex Features
Marvellous Mexico City As one of the world's most populated urban areas, Mexico City has not always had the most tourist-friendly of reputations. That it is crowded, polluted and crime-ridden are some of the accusations often thrown at Mexico's capital, but while to a degree this can be true - as it is of many major cities throughout the world - the good far outweighs the bad in one of the Americas' most exciting metropolises. Vibrant, historic and packed full of culture, Mexico City offers plenty of all the things any first time visitor could want from a modern World City. With nearly nine million people in the city itself, and an additional 10 million in the surrounding metropolitan area, Mexico City is teeming with life, both literally and metaphorically. From its Aztec origins to the colonial era and its 21st Century economic resurgence, Mexico City's story has always been as dramatic and interesting as its elevated location, 7,000 feet above sea level in a dry riverbed. Much more than just a stop-off point for changing planes, Mexico City deserves to be explored a whole lot more than it currently is by the millions of passengers that pass through its airport each year. Penang - 'The Pearl of the Orient', Malaysia
by Rex Features The multi-cultural island of Penang - once known as the Pearl of the Orient - has long been a favourite destination for European and Asian travellers, sea-bound traders and businessmen searching for a bolt hole from the steamy Malaysian mainland. In the last thirty years it has also emerged as a significant tourist destination and, more recently, as a tropical retreat for European, Asian and American second home owners encouraged by fiscal advantages introduced by the Malaysian government. Top of the second home owners list are sun-seeking Brits. Since its foundation as the first British settlement in Malaya in 1786, Penang has almost been a synonym for the exotic east. For over two hundred years the island has been a melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Indian and, to a lesser extent, British influences, where traders have met to exchange and haggle and place their mark on this bustling place known in Malay as 'Betel Nut Island' Kuvat ja teksti: http://www.rexfeatures.com/features/m13242d025/penang_-_'the_pearl_of_the_orient',_malaysia?pl=16
